⚡ The May 2026 EV Moment

The R339,900 EV is here.
Switch in 30 days.

In March 2026, South Africans bought more EVs in one month than in all of 2025. The BYD Dolphin Surf is now cheaper than a base VW Polo. We'll show you the real 5-year math, the monthly payment, and a step-by-step plan to switch — built specifically for SA load-shedding, distances, and finance.

The honest math: EV vs your current car

No marketing fluff. Pick the EV and the petrol car you'd otherwise buy. We'll show you the 5-year total cost — purchase, fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation. Where the EV doesn't win, we'll say so.

The EV beats the Polo over 5 years — even after paying more upfront. Bigger savings come from fuel (electricity ~R3.44/kWh vs petrol R26.63/L) and maintenance (no oil, fewer wear parts). Solar charging at home would add ~R35,000 more savings.

Assumptions: 15,000 km/yr · petrol 95 ULP at R26.63/L inland (effective 2026-05-06) · electricity R3.44/kWh blended residential · EV consumption 14–16 kWh/100km · insurance from Naked SA Q1 2026 averages · depreciation per Lightstone Q4 2025 trends. Coastal petrol is R25.80/L — use that if you're in CT/Durban for slightly smaller savings. Prices auto-update from official DMPR announcements.

Honest answers

What you're actually worried about

280+ days without load-shedding as of Feb 2026. But if it returns: a 7kW home charger fully charges a Dolphin Surf in 4–5 hours, so you charge during off-peak windows. Add a small home battery (5–10 kWh) and you're insulated entirely. We can size a solar+battery+EV system in your free plan.
In a Dolphin Surf (220 km range): not realistically. The N1 has DC fast chargers every 100–200 km but you'd be charging 6+ times. Honest answer: pick the BYD Dolphin (405 km) or Geely E2 (270 km) for long trips, or rent a petrol car for the rare long haul. Most South Africans do <40 km/day — the Surf is fine. CHARGE's first solar ultra-fast stations on the N3 open in June 2026.
BYD is the world's largest EV maker (sold more EVs globally in Q1 2026 than Tesla). Geely owns Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and Smart. Both have 8-year battery warranties in SA. Reliability data from China + Europe shows them at or above industry average. The actual risk in SA is parts availability — both have growing dealer networks but are 18 months behind Toyota / VW. We'll show you the closest service centre in your plan.
Naked SA published Q1 2026 figures: EV premiums average ~10% higher than equivalent ICE for the first 2 years (battery replacement risk), then equalize. On a Dolphin Surf vs Polo, you're talking ~R100/mo more. Built into our 5-year TCO above.
Yes, almost always — but you'll need trustee approval and an electrical compliance certificate. STSMA section 5(1)(b) gives you the right to apply, and a recent 2025 CSOS ruling sided with the owner. We provide application templates, MOI clauses, and sub-metering guidance as part of your free plan.
Maybe slightly. But every month you wait costs you ~R1,000–R1,500 in fuel/maintenance you'd otherwise save. The 25% EU import duty is unlikely to drop in 2026 (Treasury hasn't acted on CHARGE's lobbying). The biggest pricing move — sub-R350k entry — already happened in Sept 2025 (Dolphin Surf launch). Q2/Q3 2026 brings more variety (iCaur, Omoda, Leapmotor, Chery), not necessarily lower prices on what's here.
