What it costs

Common EV repairs in Cape Town — ballpark

Indicative cost ranges for the repair scenarios we see most often in Cape Town. Parts cost varies by brand; labour is what we control.

Issue Symptom Typical cost Notes
Home charger RCD trip Charger won't start a session, breaker trips at the DB R0 – R1,800 Free for active customers if cause is the install; ~R1,500 if it's a household-side fault.
12V battery replacement Car won't power on / lockout, "12V battery low" warning R1,800 – R3,500 Brand-specific. BYD lowest, BMW/Mercedes highest. We can swap on driveway.
Software-glitch reset "Unable to charge" warning after OTA update, car otherwise fine R0 – R950 Most clear with a hard reset (door-lock + brake hold pattern varies by brand). Dealer trip if it persists.
Charging port repair Cable won't lock / port flap damaged / pins bent R3,800 – R12,000 Dealer parts. We diagnose, then book the dealer slot for you.
Regen warning investigate Dashboard warning lamp for regen / drivetrain after a storm or shock R0 – R1,500 Diagnostic-only first. Most cases are cleared after a re-scan; some need dealer attention.
Outdoor charger enclosure Storm damage, salt-air corrosion (Atlantic / False Bay) R2,400 – R7,800 Replace with coastal-rated unit. Existing cable + breakers stay.
COC re-issue House sale / insurance audit — COC needed after related electrical work R850 – R1,800 On-site inspection + paperwork. Issued same day for most installs.

Indicative only — exact figures depend on parts, brand, and what we find on site. Out-of-warranty + premium-brand parts pricing can push above the high end.

Cape Town EV repair — what we see

Three things Cape Town EV emergencies have taught us

Cape Town is a small EV repair market — fewer specialists, but the ones who exist are close. Knowing who picks up the phone matters more here than in JHB.

Coastal-rated callouts are routine

Atlantic seaboard, Big Bay, False Bay coast — we see salt-corrosion outdoor-charger failures more here than anywhere else in SA. Replacement is fast because we keep coastal-rated units in stock.

Sectional title body-corp routing

Half our Cape Town callouts are in apartments where the body-corporate needs to be informed of any common-property electrical work. We handle the paperwork same day.

After-hours coverage 7 days

The Cape Town team is on rotation including weekends. Sunday-afternoon charger trip in Constantia? Yes, we'll pick up.

Common questions

Things Cape Town owners ask

My BYD won't charge — what's the first thing to try?
Hard-reset the charger: switch off at the DB breaker for 60 seconds, then back on. If that doesn't clear it, try a different cable — your portable Type 2 from the boot. If neither works, the home charger is the issue and we should come out. Call 064 813 8242. Active customers get on-site response inside 24 hours, no call-out fee.
Does an EV have a 12V battery? Mine seems dead.
Yes. Every EV has a separate small 12V battery that runs locks, dash and accessories, and powers on the high-voltage system. When it dies the car looks completely dead — same as a petrol car with a flat battery. We swap it on your driveway, no tow needed. BYD around R1,800, BMW and Mercedes up to R3,500. WhatsApp us the VIN.
Is it safe to drive a damaged EV to the workshop?
Depends what's damaged. Body damage that doesn't touch the battery pack — yes, drive carefully. Any sign of high-voltage system damage (regen, drivetrain or isolation-fault warning lamps, hissing, smoke, unusual smell) — stop, get out, call us. Don't risk it. We arrange a flatbed for HV-fault EVs and route you straight to the right authorised Cape Town service centre.
What if my charger trips the RCD during load-shedding recovery?
Common. Backup-inverter switchover sometimes throws a brief voltage transient that the charger reads as a fault and shuts itself down to stay safe. Step 1: switch off at the DB, wait 60 seconds, restart. Step 2: if it happens repeatedly we add a Type B RCBO upstream of the charger — routine on inverter-paired Cape Town installs. WhatsApp us and we book the visit.
My car shows "unable to charge — service required" after a software update. Is it actually broken?
Usually no. Around 80% clear with two steps: (1) hard-reset the car — Volvo holds home + brake for 20 seconds, BMW power-cycles through iDrive, BYD holds the volume knob; (2) one full charge cycle at a different public charger to clear the cache. If it still fails, it's a dealer trip. Call us first — we'll save you a wasted run to Foreshore.
Can you actually fix high-voltage battery damage?
No — and be wary of anyone in SA claiming they can. HV battery work needs OEM training, OEM parts and OEM diagnostic kit. DIY attempts void the warranty, typically 8 years on the pack. What we do well: diagnose on the driveway, confirm whether it's the HV pack or something cheaper, and book you into the right dealer if it has to go.
How fast can you actually get to me?
Active customers — chargers we installed — typically within 24 hours, often under 8 in business hours, no call-out fee. Non-customers, we still take the call: we either route you to the right Cape Town help or quote a paid emergency callout (R1,500–R2,500 by suburb and time of day). Either way you get a straight answer, not a queue ticket.
My outdoor charger's casing is cracked from a storm — is the unit dead?
Probably not. Casing damage rarely reaches live parts on a proper install — the SWA cable and breaker chain stay sealed. We come out, confirm the IP rating is still intact, and replace the enclosure if needed. Existing cable and breakers stay. We keep coastal-rated enclosures in stock for the Atlantic seaboard and False Bay, so the swap is usually one short visit.
