BYD launched the Sealion 7 in South Africa on 3 and 4 April 2025, entering a market that has grown from fewer than 1,000 EVs on the road in 2020 to roughly 7,000 to 10,000 units by end-2025. AutoTrader recorded a 220 percent increase in EV searches between March 2025 and March 2026, and approximately 20 distinct EV models are now available locally. The Sealion 7 was designed explicitly with the Tesla Model Y as its primary competitive benchmark, which makes the comparison a natural starting point for any South African buyer evaluating premium electric crossovers.

The timing is also better than any previous BYD launch. South Africa reached 300 consecutive days without load-shedding at midnight on 12 March 2026, removing the single biggest psychological barrier to buying an EV that depends on overnight home charging. Add to that a government tax incentive of 150 percent deduction for manufacturers investing in local EV and hydrogen vehicle production from 1 March 2026, and the structural environment has shifted meaningfully. BYD sold 705 units in April 2026 alone, outselling Honda and Mazda combined, a signal of how quickly buyer confidence has built.

Pricing: what you actually pay

BYD South Africa offers the Sealion 7 in exactly two variants. The Premium RWD is priced at R1,109,900. The Performance AWD sits at R1,299,900 to R1,319,900 depending on the dealer. Both include the 7 kW wallbox charger and 2.2 kW portable charger in the purchase price, which represents a meaningful saving versus competitors where home charging hardware is sold separately. One useful cross-check on value is the cost per kilowatt-hour of battery capacity. The Premium RWD works out to approximately R13,450 per kWh of the 82.56 kWh Blade battery. The Performance AWD, using the midpoint price of R1,309,900, comes to roughly R15,746 per kWh. Compare that to the MG Cyberster at R18,179 per kWh and the picture clarifies quickly.

WLTP testing is conducted at a controlled 23 degrees Celsius in a laboratory on a dynamometer over an approximately 30-minute cycle. South African summer temperatures, highway speeds and an occasionally enthusiastic right foot all push consumption higher. The Cars.co.za road test returned 18.0 kWh/100 km and approximately 400 km of real-world range, a gap of around 17 percent below the 482 km WLTP figure for the Premium RWD. A European real-world test recorded 20.1 kWh/100 km, yielding roughly 410 km from the 82.5 kWh usable capacity. Both figures land comfortably within the expected 10 to 20 percent WLTP optimism range.

For practical route planning, a 70 to 80 percent rule works well. That gives you a usable planning range of roughly 320 to 340 km before you want to be near a charger. Highway driving at sustained speeds above 110 km/h typically delivers 25 to 30 percent less range than WLTP ratings. Cold weather can reduce range by up to 30 percent, though that is rarely South Africa’s primary concern. The more relevant local factor is heat and frequent use of the performance modes on the AWD variant.

The included 7 kW wallbox gives a full charge (0 to 100 percent) in approximately 8 to 9 hours, making overnight charging completely practical for the vast majority of daily distances. With the 11 kW on-board charger accepting three-phase supply, a dedicated three-phase installation reduces that to approximately 6 to 7.5 hours. Note that a 22 kW three-phase wallbox will be throttled to 11 kW by the car’s on-board charger, so there is no benefit in over-speccing the home installation for this vehicle.

On the public network, 150 kW DC fast charging takes the battery from 20 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. Using a 100 kW rapid charger, expect 31 to 38 minutes for the same window. South Africa’s public DC stations from GridCars and Rubicon were priced at R7.35 and R7.00 per kWh respectively as of August 2025 (Rubicon Tech). Check your eMSP app for current 2026 pricing before long trips, as rates have moved since then.

South Africa has approximately 445 public charging sites with around 650 chargers and over 1,200 connectors as of early 2026. The EV-to-charger ratio sits at roughly 1:7, which is better than the global 1:10 benchmark. BYD itself plans to add 200 to 300 public chargers nationwide by end of 2026, including ultra-fast 1 MW Flash Charging stations, with construction having begun April/May 2026.

For the N3 Johannesburg to Durban corridor, the CHARGE network has rolled out solar-powered off-grid stations capable of 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 25 minutes, backed by R100 million from the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Audi has added six 150 kW DC rapid chargers along the N1, N2 and N3 with a total investment of over R50 million since 2022. Longer hauls on the N1 still carry a gap of roughly 300 km between Beaufort West and Three Sisters where fast charging is essentially absent, which matters for Cape Town to Johannesburg drives.

The battery: Blade LFP chemistry explained simply

The Sealion 7 uses BYD’s proprietary Blade battery, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry cell. LFP is safer and longer-lasting than the nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry used in many competing EVs, with 3,000-plus charge cycles before meaningful degradation. The trade-off is slightly lower energy density, which is why the pack is 82.56 kWh despite the car’s relatively compact crossover footprint.

BYD guarantees a minimum 70 percent state of health over 8 years or 200,000 km under normal use. Industry data on early BYD Atto 3 owners who reached 100,000 km in 2023 showed 96 to 98 percent battery capacity retained with no major mechanical issues. The rear motor on the Performance AWD spins at up to 23,000 rpm, a measure of how precisely engineered these motors are relative to traditional ICE components. An electric motor has approximately 20 moving parts versus more than 2,000 in a petrol engine, which is the structural reason maintenance costs are lower.

Tesla has no authorised dealer network in South Africa, no official pricing and no local warranty support. Used grey imports are listed on AutoTrader, but the import duty structure, 25 percent plus ad valorem tax as high as 30 percent, means total import costs on any vehicle can reach 45 to 65 percent of the vehicle’s value. For a new car purchase at this price point, the absence of local aftersales support is a material risk most buyers should not accept.

The MG Cyberster AWD is the closest officially-available competitor at R1,399,900, but it is a sports roadster, not a family crossover, and its 77 kWh lithium-ion battery costs R18,179 per kWh versus the Sealion 7’s R13,450. The Volvo EX30 starts considerably lower at R629,900 but is a much smaller vehicle; its top Cross Country variant at R1,165,000 is closer in positioning, though it carries an 8-year battery warranty at 160,000 km versus BYD’s 200,000 km.

BYD’s answer to the brand-trust question is the warranty structure and the dealer footprint. Eight showrooms at launch with more expected, a 5-year vehicle warranty, 8-year battery warranty and 5-year drive unit warranty represent a substantive commitment to the local market. The Blade battery’s LFP chemistry has a longer proven track record than some newer chemistries in competing vehicles.

Cost of ownership: the numbers that really matter

Home charging is where the financial case for the Sealion 7 is built. Ninety percent of EV charging happens at home, and the public network is primarily used for road trips.

At residential tariffs of R3.00 to R4.00 per kWh, charging 100 km of real-world range (18 kWh at the Cars.co.za test figure) costs approximately R54 to R72 per 100 km. Specific metro rates:

  • Johannesburg (City Power): approximately R3.80/kWh flat, so roughly R68 per 100 km.
  • Cape Town: approximately R3.45/kWh standard, or as low as R2.10/kWh on the Home Power Plus off-peak rate, giving R38 per 100 km overnight.
  • Durban (eThekwini): approximately R3.20/kWh, so roughly R58 per 100 km.

Compare that to a comparable petrol SUV. At R26.63 per litre (petrol 95 inland, May 2026) and a consumption of 9 litres per 100 km, you are paying approximately R240 per 100 km. The EV home charging advantage is roughly 65 to 75 percent lower running cost per kilometre. For a driver covering 20,000 km per year, annual fuel savings of R31,500 to R34,500 compared to petrol are achievable, with break-even on the EV premium typically reached in 2 to 3 years for average drivers on home charging.

On maintenance, EVs have approximately 20 moving parts in the drivetrain versus over 2,000 in a petrol engine. Industry comparisons show EV maintenance over 5 years runs roughly R12,000 total versus R45,000 for a petrol vehicle. The Sealion 7’s battery degradation is also well-contained: LFP chemistry typically loses 2 to 3 percent capacity per year on average, and BYD’s own Atto 3 early adopters showed 96 to 98 percent retention at 100,000 km.

One cost that does run higher is insurance. EVs are approximately 25.5 percent more expensive to repair and take 14 percent longer to repair than ICE vehicles, which feeds into premiums that are typically 10 to 15 percent higher than equivalent petrol vehicles. Budget for this in your total cost calculation.

The home charger that comes included, and what to do about installation

The included 7 kW wallbox is a useful starting point, but it needs to be properly installed by a qualified electrician to SANS 10142-1 standard with an electrical Certificate of Compliance before it can be used. Installation cost is not included in the car purchase and varies by site: the typical range for a professionally installed 7 kW single-phase wallbox in South Africa is R14,000 to R26,000 fully installed including the CoC, with hardware accounting for R8,000 to R18,000 of that range and the balance covering the electrical work and certificate.

If you have three-phase supply at your property, the Sealion 7’s 11 kW on-board charger will accept a faster AC feed and reduce overnight charge time to 6 to 7.5 hours. The Caro Pro (CP-AC22) is a 22 kW three-phase wallbox (from approximately R13,900 per unit, installation quoted per site) that future-proofs your installation for any car you buy next, even though the Sealion 7 will only draw the 11 kW it can accept. It includes dynamic load balancing, Wi-Fi/Ethernet connectivity, OCPP compliance and PV solar charging integration, relevant if you are considering solar pairing at the same time. For a simpler single-phase setup, the Caro Plus (CP-AC7) (from approximately R8,900 per unit plus installation) handles the 7 kW feed the car ships with and is the lower-cost entry point. In both cases the installation cost is quoted per site because DB board proximity, cable run length and whether you need an upgraded earth leakage device all affect the final number.

The payback period on a home charger installation is typically 6 to 12 months from fuel savings alone at current petrol prices.

Who should buy the Sealion 7 and who should think twice

The ideal South African Sealion 7 buyer drives less than 150 km per day, has access to home charging (either a garage or covered parking with a nearby DB board), plans to keep the car for 5 or more years, and values the combination of low running costs and a strong warranty backstop. The financial case is strongest for anyone currently running a large-engined petrol SUV who is covering 20,000 km or more per year.

The case is weaker for apartment dwellers without guaranteed private parking and charging access, buyers in rural areas with no reliable fast charging on their regular routes, high-mileage reps covering 200 km-plus daily, and anyone who needs to tow above 2,000 kg regularly. The N1 Beaufort West to Three Sisters gap is also a practical concern for Cape Town to Gauteng drives.

The Performance AWD at R1,299,900 to R1,319,900 and 4.5 seconds to 100 km/h is genuinely fast by any standard. Its 390 kW and 690 Nm are figures associated with serious performance cars, not family crossovers. But the real-world range penalty from exploiting that performance is worth keeping in mind.
