Who is Leapmotor, and why does the Stellantis link matter?
Leapmotor is a Zhejiang-based Chinese EV maker. In 2023 Stellantis acquired a 51% stake in a new joint venture called Leapmotor International, with the Chinese parent holding 49% (CnEVPost). That structure matters for South African buyers: warranty claims, parts logistics and dealer support sit under a Stellantis-managed entity, not a standalone Chinese importer. Stellantis already distributes Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat and Jeep locally, so the dealer and workshop infrastructure theoretically exists. Whether that translates into acceptable response times for a brand-new model line is a question the market is still answering.

What REEV actually means, and why the 145 km figure is what counts
REEV stands for Range-Extended Electric Vehicle. The C10 REEV has a battery and an electric motor as its primary drivetrain, plus a small petrol engine that acts purely as a generator, it does not drive the wheels. On a full battery you get 145 km of WLTP electric range (Stellantis Media). Once the battery is depleted, the generator tops it up while you keep moving, giving a combined range of 970 km (Stellantis Media) before you need to fill the petrol tank.
The practical implication: for a typical South African daily commute of 38-55 km (Cars.co.za), you would almost never touch the petrol generator. CAR Magazine’s data puts the national average at 44 km per day, well inside the 145 km electric window. But anyone marketing this car primarily on the 970 km figure is doing buyers a disservice. Charging compatibility: what connector and what power do you actually need?

All three brands use the CCS2 standard for DC fast charging, which is the South African public network norm. The BYD Dolphin Surf buyer saves across all cost lines versus petrol and enters at R389,900. The Leapmotor C10 REEV buyer pays R370,000 more for the Dynamic-equivalent price comparison, that premium buys a much larger car with a five-star Euro NCAP rating, 970 km combined range, and the peace of mind of never needing a charge on a long drive. The aftersales risk: what overseas owners are saying
This is the section most launch reviews skip. Leapmotor is a young brand in markets where it launched before South Africa, and Trustpilot reviews from UK owners carry patterns that SA buyers deserve to see before signing.
“The C10 itself is a genuinely good car, spacious, well-equipped, and excellent value for money. It feels modern inside and is comfortable to drive. However, the experience is let down significantly by Leapmotor’s aftersales customer care. Communication has been poor, responses are slow, and there appears to be a lack of accountability when issues arise. It’s frustrating because the product itself has real potential, but the ownership experience doesn’t currently match the quality of the car.”

For a buyer prioritising aftersales certainty today, BYD’s local footprint is the most established of the three.
Real range vs WLTP: planning your charging around South African roads

WLTP figures are a controlled-test baseline. Real-world mixed driving typically comes in 10-13% lower for the BYD Dolphin Surf (EV Cost Calculator South Africa), so budget 200-215 km (Comfort) and 255-270 km (Dynamic) rather than the headline numbers. The AutoTrader test of the Dolphin Surf Dynamic actually beat the claim, returning 303 km against the 295 km WLTP figure, which is a positive outlier.

The national public charging network stands at approximately 650 public EV chargers across 445+ sites as of April 2026 (ChargePoint SA). BYD has announced plans for 200-300 Flash Charging stations by end of 2026, with construction beginning April/May 2026 (TechCentral). The C10 REEV’s built-in generator removes most range-anxiety concerns on longer routes, the N1 stretch between Beaufort West and Three Sisters, a 300 km gap with essentially no public fast charging (ChargePoint SA), becomes manageable in a REEV in a way it simply is not in a pure BEV.
Who should buy which car?
These three models serve different buyer profiles. The BYD Dolphin Surf is for city and suburb commuters who want the lowest entry price, lowest running costs and a 7 kW wallbox thrown in at launch. Its 55 kW motor and 130 km/h top speed are adequate for urban use, though the Dolphin Standard (R539,900) or Extended Range (R599,900-R602,900) make more sense for anyone doing regular highway driving. The Tesla Model Y offers the longest real-world range (533 km) and the most mature software, but the absence of any authorised African service infrastructure is a genuine ownership risk at any price. The Leapmotor C10 REEV targets buyers who want a premium-sized family SUV, regularly travel between cities, and are not ready to manage pure-EV range anxiety, the REEV format solves the infrastructure problem in a way pure BEVs do not.
The Stellantis backing of Leapmotor International does differentiate it from other Chinese newcomers. Stellantis has skin in the game financially and reputationally. That said, buyers should insist on clarity about the local service agreement, parts stocking commitments and escalation procedures before signing. The product deserves its positive reviews for build quality and equipment. The ownership experience, based on overseas data, is still maturing.
