BYD Flash Charging in SA: Real Specs, Cost & Practicality

BYD's megawatt Flash Charging promises 400 km in 5 minutes — but no stations exist in SA yet. Here's what the specs mean, what it costs, and who benefits.

Key points

  • BYD Flash Charging Generation 1 outputs up to 1,000 kW (1 MW) at 1,000 V, claiming 400 km of range in five minutes on the Chinese CLTC standard, roughly one-third higher than the WLTP figures South African owners recognise. Generation 2 steps up to 1,500 kW peak power delivery, introduced in March 2026.
  • As of mid-2026, not a single BYD Flash Charger has been constructed in South Africa. Rollout was originally planned for April or May 2026 but was delayed by the upgrade from Gen 1 to Gen 2 specifications.
  • South Africa’s mainstream public DC fast charging currently tops out at 150 kW, with GridCars deploying 650 kW DC connectors at three highway sites targeting electric trucks, the first infrastructure of that scale in the country.
  • The EVs currently on sale in South Africa that benefit most from high-power DC charging, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (peak 240+ kW, 800-volt architecture), are capped by charger hardware, not by the car itself.
  • Public DC charging tariffs were R7.00-R7.35/kWh as of August 2025 (Rubicon and GridCars respectively). Eskom tariff increases of 8.76% from 1 April 2026 and 9.01% from 1 July 2026 have also lifted home charging costs, but from a much lower base of R1.45-R2.25/kWh off-peak.
  • A well-managed home or workplace charger almost always beats public ultra-fast charging on cost per kilometre for South African daily drivers.

What BYD Flash Charging actually is

BYD Flash Charging is a proprietary ultra-high-power DC charging system designed to close the gap between EV charging and petrol refuelling. According to BYD’s official Super e-Platform announcement, Generation 1 outputs 1,000 kW (1 MW) at a peak current of 1,000 amps and operates on a 1,000-volt architecture, achieving a 10C charge rate, a world record for mass-production batteries at the time of launch. Generation 2, introduced in March 2026, steps up to 1,500 kW peak power delivery and can charge from 10% to 70% state of charge in five minutes.

The headline claim is 400 km of range in five minutes under the CLTC standard. That figure applies to BYD’s Han L and Tang L models on the Super e-Platform. However, the CLTC standard produces range estimates roughly one-third higher than the WLTP or EPA figures South African owners are used to seeing, so a realistic SA-condition figure would be somewhat lower.

The charging terminal itself is fully liquid-cooled and outputs up to 1,360 kW maximum per terminal. A built-in 200 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) rated at 704 VDC nominal buffers the draw on the grid, so the station does not require a dedicated megawatt-scale grid connection at each site. In South Africa, BYD plans to combine grid electricity with solar power at each station to reduce both grid dependency and operating costs, a sensible choice given South Africa’s solar resource and history of load-shedding.
